It asks nothing of your technique before it starts working, and it is a proper tennis shoe rather than a running trainer, which matters more than people expect: a running sole will shred on a hard court within weeks.

The Barricade is the shoe adidas built its tennis reputation on, and the fourteenth version keeps the point of it: stability above everything. It is the most supportive shoe on this page and the choice for a heavier player, anyone who has turned an ankle, or anyone who simply wants to feel held in rather than close to the court.

You get a TPU midfoot support system and a mesh upper with heel-locking pods, and the trade is weight. It is not the shoe for a player who wants to feel quick, but it is the one most likely to still be intact at the end of a hard-court season. The Avacourt is adidas's womens-specific performance shoe, built on a womens last rather than a scaled-down mens one, which shows in how it holds the heel and midfoot. The third version is the best of them so far and it is our strongest selling womens adidas shoe.

It sits closer to the Barricade than the Defiant Speed in character: supportive and stable rather than light and quick, but without the Barricade's weight. A good choice if you play regularly and want a shoe that stays comfortable through a long match. Stock is the shallowest on this page, so worth not waiting if your size is showing.

The newest shoe on this page and the quiet all-rounder of the range. The CourtJam Control 3 does not lead on any single quality, which is rather the point: it is comfortable, reasonably supportive, reasonably light, and considerably better value than the performance shoes above it.

It is the sensible pick if you play once or twice a week and cannot see a reason to spend more, or as a second pair to rotate so your main shoes last longer. Because it has only recently arrived there is full size availability, and we hold it deep.
